I have some theories that octane by itself does improve posted by lil'abner on April 18, 2006 at 08:15 PM |

Im not so sure the ECU is actually programmed to take advantage of higher octane fuels, only because it has nothing to measure the octane of the fuel with. The only way it could judge is by advancing timing until it hears knock, which would obviously make more power, however the ECU does in fact only have a regular timing map, and a safety boost timing map. The ECU does not account for any octane higher than what it is tuned for. If the ECU did advance timing until it heard detonation in an attempt to pull the most power, then those of us with a by-passed detonation sensor would have had our ECUs advance timing until the car detonated, or just didnt run, I have a by-passed det sensor, and can definitely say this has never happened. Being a sceince major in bio/chem, i have to say i strongly believe in the fact that the extra energy comes from either the additive being denser and containing more energy per unit, or that due to the molecular structure of the additive more energy is released in the breaking of the bond.
